Hari Aum.
I recently discovered the beautiful poem 'Krishnashtakam'. This consists of 8 verses (ashtakam) in praise of Lord Krishna and was composed by the great Guru, saint and poet Adi Shankara. He composed many exquisitely beautiful prayers including the Soundariya Lahiri, Mahishasura Mardini, and many more.
The Krishnashtakam is, in my view, one of Adi Shankara's most wonderful compositions. This brings to life the form of Lord Krishna in the mind's eye. As one recites these verses with knowledge of their meaning, one is effectively meditating on the form of Sri Krishna. One naturally would like to see the beautiful form described. Although we may not be able to see Krishna right away with our physical eyes, we can take comfort in His promise that He will be present where His name is sung. And Krishna's words are ever true as He is the embodiment of Truth itself. Fire may burn downwards, water may flow upwards, anything can happen but the words of Lord Krishna cannot be false. Let us therefore sing these verses knowing that He is with us when we call His names.

Namaskaram,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this "Ashtakam" on Lord Krishna. In my opinion, each of Adi Shankara's composition is a unique jewel be it "Mahishasuri Mardini" or "Nirvana Shatakam". I appreciate the english meanings that you had put in brackets against each sanskrit line. It helps a lot of chanting these shlokas knowing their meaning as it increases one's devotion towards the Deity we are trying to invoke. May we all with our Sadhana please Krishna and experience His divine love in this very birth.
Namaskaram,
DeleteI am glad you found this post with the English translation helpful. I too find it helps to increase devotional feeling when chanting to know the meaning of the Sanskrit words (even though they have an effect even without knowledge of the meaning).
The poetry of Adi Shankara's works is indeed amazing. I love the Mahishasura Mardini and Nirvana shatakam too-- was planning to recite the former later today as it is Navaratri (recitation of that prayer is said to have the spiritual effect of reciting the entire Devi Mahatmyam). The Saptasloki Durga is wonderful too.
Om Durgam Devim sharanamaham prapadye.
Shri Krishnam sharanam mama.
May the Lord and Divine Mother bless us all with true devotion to God in this very lifetime.
