Janmashtami greetings

 Hari Aum.

The celebration of the birthday of Lord Krishna is coming up in two days time. Based on the Vedic lunar calendar, the date falls on August 26 this year.

A very happy Janmashtami to all readers. May Lord Krishna bless us all with the capacity to keep up our spiritual practices. May He bless us and the whole world with devotion and spiritual wisdom.

As usual, in celebration of Janmashtami, the books on the life of Lord Krishna that I had written a few years ago will be available for free download from Amazon for a period of five days (i.e. August 26th- 30th inclusive, starting from 12 am PDT). Please see below for the link. (There are four books in total. The last book, Yogeshwara, contains the Uddhava Gita.)

Just to say, I am currently in the process of preparing my next installment of the Ramayana series for this blog (was hoping to have published it by now but was unable to due to travel and then getting Covid-- was not as bad as two years ago but still fairly unpleasant).

On a public health note, please keep an eye out for your local government/ medical advice regarding the Mpox virus-- as many of you may be aware, this was declared a 'public health emergency of global concern' by the WHO around ten days ago. There is obviously no need to panic but common sense is needed-- and this would mean keeping an eye on the situation and following our local public health guidelines regarding taking preventative measures etc.

This is a UN article on the subject:

On a more positive note, I am glad to say that I passed my recent dance exam (with actually quite decent marks to my surprise!) and received some encouraging feedback from my teacher. I have been therefore been permitted to continue my studies and progress to the next year which I am happy about (of course, 'happy' can be a strong word after a two-hour class of what can feel almost like military training but still!)
In the midst of viruses, wars and various other troublesome issues on this planet, I feel it is very important to maintain one's sanity through a combination of spiritual practice and enjoyable hobbies!

Speaking of wars, there unfortunately seems to be no sign of any of them abating currently. Let us therefore continue our prayers for the relief of suffering and the general wellbeing of everyone. May sanity prevail, however long it takes.

In accordance with the advice of Gurus of all spiritual traditions, let us do daily chanting and singing of the names of whichever deity we like for our own wellbeing and that of everyone.

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.
Om Namo Narayanaya.

May Lord Krishna bless us all.

Hari Aum Tat Sat.

P.S. I watched the 'Kalki 2898 AD' movie on Netflix a few days ago and found it quite interesting (not too pleased that the sequel will only be released in three years time though!).

It paints a very grim and grisly picture of a future Earth at a much later stage in Kali yuga, the present spiritual age of quarrels and war (unfortunately our scriptures, the Puranas, do describe a significant deterioration over time). The Earth is shown to be devoid of clean air or water or even sunshine. And then, of course, an avatar of Narayana appears-- this avatar is called Kalki (the one yet to come in this spiritual age; His name is pronounced as "Cull-key").

After watching this movie, I felt extremely grateful for the simple things in life that I often take for granted, such as drinking water, relatively clean air, sunshine and plants! This movie really reminds one that we cannot take anything in life for granted.

Unfortunately, the depressing reality of our world today is that there are places where people currently suffer intensely in a way that is not far-off from that portrayed in the movie. This is why our Gurus tell us to keep up spiritual practice every day, no matter what happens within or without in our lives.

The mantra of God gives protection to us and to others-- that is a simple fact of life according to them (and many of us would have found this to be true in our own experience of life).

It is also useful to remind ourselves that, although there is much that is negative about this Kali yuga, our Puranas declare that this is the best time (of all yugas) to be born as a human being.

No other yuga/period of time produces such rapid results from spiritual practice as this one (we are still talking about decades of practice though, of course-- just not thousands of years of practice as the longer-lived people of previous ages were apparantly expected to do!). It would be nice to make full use of our current birth in this Kali yuga and thus attain the spiritual goal (and hopefully not be compelled to be reborn at a later stage when the situation is likely to be much worse than it is at present).

On that note, I am still continuing my current purascharana at a steady seven malas per day. And I'm also keeping up some singing/bhajan/kirtan and devotional dance as part of my worship as this combination currently seems to work for me.

I hope and pray that you too are keeping up your own daily spiritual practice and that this is going well.

Om Namo Narayanaya.

Each of these books contains beautiful interactions between Krishna and His devotees, and some wonderful spiritual teachings.

The fourth and last book of this series will be published in the next few months and will contain Krishna's great teaching, known as the 'Uddhava Gita' (similar to His great Bhagavad Gita, that is explained in Vyasa's work, the Mahabharata).

Happy Janmashtami, may Lord Krishna bless us all.

Dwarakanatha book 2

Hari Aum.

I would like to say that I have completed the second book of the life of Lord Krishna series and this is now published on Amazon kindle (a paperback version will also be available soon).

This book details the adolescence and early adult life of Lord Krishna. I have called it, 'Dwarakanatha' (one of Krishna's names meaning lord of Dwaraka) as this book describes the founding of a new city called Dwaraka by Krishna- an important phase in His life.

As with the previous book, 'Balakrishna', this book also contains a number of wonderful interactions between Krishna and His devotees including Narada, Uddhava and Muchukunda.

The beautiful story of the marriage between Krishna and Rukmini is also described.

I have been writing these books as a sadhana, and can say that studying the life of Lord Krishna in detail has been a very useful learning experience for me. One thing that amazes me is how relevant the stories in His life are to today, and the positive and uplifting nature of His message to humanity.

For example, Krishna says that human life only is made meaningful to the extent that one is helpful to other people and living beings. What a wonderful, practical message. The world would be a much happier place, in my view, if more people had this approach to life.

Also, in the episode of the brahmin wives (described in 'Balakrishna', book 1), there is a clear message in favour of gender equality. Further, the episode of Rukmini's marriage, highlights clearly that forced marriage is an unacceptable practice (the villains in this story try and make Rukmini marry by force, and Krishna rescues her). On the whole, the events in Lord Krishna's life themselves each contain a message for humanity and would benefit us all if understood in the proper light.

Hope you enjoy the book. As with the previous book, all proceeds will be donated towards the medical work of the Sivananda charitable hospital at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, India.

My new year gift

Hari Aum.

It is new year's eve today and I would like to wish all readers of this blog a happy and prosperous new year. May 2018 be a year of excellent spiritual progress for all of us, and may we all make strides towards the goal of spiritual peace, wisdom and bliss.

I would like to offer my first book "Balakrishna" for free as a new year gift to all readers. The Amazon website allows authors to provide their ebooks for free for a limited period from time to time and I am making use of this facility now.

I am offering the ebook for free download for a three day period starting from today (Dec 31) upto and including January 2.

I believe the stories of Lord Krishna contain a number of valuable teachings necessary to live a happy life here and hereafter and therefore feel this would be a good gift to give others. In addition, reading of the stories of God is one of the nine classical methods of developing devotion to God (which leads to liberation). I hope you will enjoy reading this book and that it will help you on your journey to develop the fortunate state of true devotion to God.

To read the ebook, readers will first need to download the Amazon kindle app- this is free. The link for this is here (you can select the Amazon website for your own country to access this):

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=kindle+app

Once you have installed the free Amazon kindle app on your electronic device, you can download the kindle ebook Balakrishna for free for the next three days.

See links below for the Amazon website (again you check the site for your own country):

Happy reading and happy new year!

Just to say, I am nearly halfway through writing the second book in this series (which talks about the adolescence and early adult life of Lord Krishna) and am aiming to publish this on Amazon in the next few weeks.

Balakrishna book 1

Hari Aum.

It has been about eight weeks since I completed purascharana 3 and I will be starting purascharana 4 tomorrow on the auspicous Guru pushya yoga day.

The past five weeks have been very busy for me. I have been reading the life of Lord Krishna in the well-known ancient scripture, the Srimad Bhagavatam. I then wanted to re-tell the story in a concise way for those who would also like to know about Krishna but currently lack the time to read the whole story in the original scripture.

I have therefore written my first book on the life of Lord Krishna as described in the Bhagavatam. This describes the childhood of Krishna upto eight years of age. I will be writing three further books to complete the entire story of Krishna in the Srimad Bhagavatam. The life of Krishna is filled with teachings of deep spiritual significance.

This book is dedicated to my Guru, Swami Sivananda, who was a great devotee of Lord Krishna, and who is my inspiration to keep walking on the spiritual path.

Therefore, I have decided to post this book on the Amazon website and will donate all funds from the sales of this towards the work of the charitable hospital run by my Guru's ashram in Rishikesh, India. I have worked at the hospital myself and have seen the genuine service that the doctors there provide to the poorest sections of society. The hospital provides free medicines, investigations and surgery- they do not charge patients for anything. It is a privilege for me to be able to support them in any way that I can. I have been making an annual donation to the hospital and will add any proceeds from the book sales to this.

I am therefore sharing the book here in case it is of interest to any readers. This book contains some very valuable spiritual teachings, especially on bhakti yoga, the path of devotion. A free sample can be downloaded from Amazon.

The book can be read either electronically as an 'ebook '- for this, readers will need to download the free Amazon 'kindle app' on to their computer/tablet/phone/electronic device. Alternatively, it can also be read as a paperback.

The book is available on Amazon (both ebook and paperback) in a variety of countries and I am sharing some of these here for the convenience of readers.

Om Sri Krishnaya Namah
Om Namo Narayanaya

Hope you enjoy reading the book. I certainly enjoyed writing it (though it took quite a bit of work!).

Hari Aum Tat Sat

P.S.  I have tidied up this blog a bit today and removed some posts that were relevant when I posted them but are less so currently. I hope this will make for a better experience for those who read this blog.
