    1. I'm sorry I thought I had replied to this comment when it was made (please accept my apologies for the delay). I have mentioned in various places on this blog that a purascharana is 100,000 times the number of syllables of the mantra i.e. for Shiva panchakshara, this number would be 500,000. Additionally one can do homam/tarpanam/marjanam, or alternatively an extra 20% of the 500,000. Furthermore one should give in charity to support worthy organisations to complete the purascharana. Hope this helps.

  2. Madam what do you visualize when you are chanting mantra. Also, did you ever get lost in thoughts related to God or world during chanting? Or Can we think of God in different forms? Please clarify my doubt.

    1. Namaste Thanuja,
I visualise the form of the deity whose mantra I am repeating while chanting the mantra. Yes, when the concentration is deep, I do get absorbed in thoughts of God. Thoughts of the world can intrude during chanting but I bring my mind back again and again to the deity. You can think of God in various forms, but if you have a favourite form, then this should be the main focus.
      Hope this help.

  3. Akka, I started mantra japa on my own without initiation as I don't know who would give initiation. Somewhere I read that by doing 8 lakh chants, I will be able to see my God. I thought doing 8 lakhs would be enough. But your post made it clear that we need to do multiple purascharanas to make it possible. In this blog somewhere you wrote that your goal in this life is to attain true devotion to God and realization is a good side effect which can be given by God if he desires, that inspired me a lot. I have decided to continue my japa till the end of my life. I seek your blessings to continue so. Since you have done many purascharanas please bless me as a guru. I bow to you.

I would like to know how much you are connected to God now. Did you get to see him? Please skip these answers if they shouldn't be disclosed

    Regards,
    Thanuja

    1. Namaste Thanuja,

I am very happy for you that you have started your mantra journey. It will take you very far in life-- you will be surprised. It is true that prolonged practice for years is required for most people to progress spiritually and we need to be prepared for this. But, whether or not we have selected a Guru, all Gurus (visible and invisible) send their support and protection to us, struggling aspirants. And even a little practice begins to show positive results and benefits in our lives.

On that note, I will say that I am a spiritual seeker and not a Guru. I am grateful to God and my Guru to have had some encouraging experiences on this journey that motivate me to keep going (some of these have been described in the article from last year titled 'Experiences during purascharanas so far'-- the link is above). I have not had a darshan of God in the waking state with my physical eyes, but in dreams yes, on a few occasions I have had His darshan when I was in need.

The mantra will guide and protect you, it will open up new experiences and a new way of looking at life itself. I regard it as the greatest blessing of God in my life that I have a mantra and that I practice it. You are very fortunate to want to take up this divine practice.

As a fellow spiritual seeker and warm well-wisher, I pray that He/She gives you too the strength and motivation to keep going on this wonderful path. May God bless you so that your sadhana is successful, you absolutely have my blessings too.

      Om shanti
      Vishnupriya
